Sometimes I try to think of how many sand bags I helped fill. It had to be thousands and thousands. I liked the cloth bags much better than the nylon/mesh bags. Regular cloth were easier to tie and stayed in place better. It didn't take any real knack to fill a sand bag, but there were few things more boring than holding a sand bag and your buddy just couldn't get any large amount of dirt into the bag. Why did we call them sand bags when they were filled with dirt.

I too, filled my share of sand bags and helped build many sand bag walls and, No, I didn't enjoy it however, considering the fact that our base camp was mortared frequently (often nightly), I figured it was the smart thing to do.
The value of sand bags became very personal when an M151 I was riding shot gun in, hit a mine with the right front wheel. I had 2 sand bags on the floor board (very uncomfortable) which saved my legs and other vital parts. The entire floor board was blown away (along with the majority of the R/F suspension etc) from the frame but the sand bags kept it in one piece, saving me a lot of misery or worse.
Sand bags may be a pain but they are definitely life savers! ;D
