Dear Shortimer Sam,


The mission of the Center for Research of Unit Records is to provide research in support of claims and to show the proximity of herbicide spray missions to unit base area locations in Vietnam. Their is to provide documented information to support veterans' involvement in stressful incidents while serving in the military.

of Unit Records (CRUR)
The U.S. Armed Services Center for Research of unit Records (CRUR), formerly Environmental Support Group (ESG), provides research in support of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) claims, Agent Orange exposure and provides information for veterans to obtain unit records. The CRUR will research records concerning PTSD claims for specific stress incidents without charging the veteran or the requestor.


If you feel you have been exposed to Agent Orange, please provide the dates you were assigned to your units in Vietnam, unit designations and base camp locations.


If you desire to file a claim for disability , please contact your local Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office (VARO). Also, call or write your local VA office to receive information concerning PTSD or how to file a claim. A local service officer from one of the major veterans organizations can also provide information and assistance.


If you need information about casualties from the Vietnam War, please provide as close to the date as possible, the individual's full name, unit designation and a brief description of the incident. If this information is not available, please provide as much information on the casualty as you can recall.


In order to provide information concerning attacks, please provide as much of the following information as you can: date of the incident (as close as you can remember), type and location of the attack, numbers and full names of casualties, unit designations to the company level, and other units involved. The more detailed the information, the better chance of successful research.


Requests for research should include a copy of your DA Form 20. This form is maintained in your Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). You may request a copy of your OMPF by writing to the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC), ATTN: U.S. Army Liaison, 9700 Page Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63132. The OMPF will also provide medical records, unit and duty assignments, and orders of personnel actions such as promotions, awards and commendations.

I was stationed at the 108th. Artillary Group HQ from Sept. 1968 to Nov. 1969 at Dong Ha. In Aug. or Sept. 1969 I was sent on a PX run to Danang with some other guys from the 108 artillary Group HQ. We stayed at a Marine company in Danang over night. The Marine company was hit and we managed to keep them out of our wire. I was fighting with the Marines that night. The Marine company across the road behind us was over ran.
The Marines tried to give me the Navy cross . I was told one military branch couldn't give a medal to another military branch. This drug on for quite a while. I extended my Nam tour so I could qualify for the 150 day early out program. I was told that if I would extend my tour for 6 months they would give me Staff Sargent E-6 and convert the Navy cross to the Silver Star and award it to me. I was Specialist E-5 at the time. I didn't feel that I wanted to do this, so they said forget it. I was told just before I left the 108th. that the credit for what I did since I wasn't going to stay in was given to our Supply Sargent that wasn't even there.
Also I was Specialist E-5 in charge of the first cronagraph in country. I and my two privates were sent to USARV HQ to train to operate this piece of equiptment. We used this to calibrate Artillary, 105, 155 & 8 inch guns. There was suposed to be a lieutenant in charge, there wasn't one assigned to us or at least I didn't see one. We were told there wasn't anyone to train us, so take the manuals and figure it out for our selves, and back to Northern I corps we went. We calibrated all the artillary in Northern I Corps. We drove a 3/4 ton truck with a trailer towed behind to all the firebases Army and Marines and airlifted into the LZs. I was under the impression that a Specialist wasn't supposed to be incharge of troups and in command in this capacity. I complained and they made me acting sargent E-5 and was told that my position was important enough to make me a real Sargent. I felt that the reason we didn't have a real Sargent or Lieutenant was that they didn't want to face the danger we faced. We were on LZ Russel 2 days after it was over run and was still under sniper fire. We were very often under fire. Mortar and Artillary mostly.
We never waited for the mine sweeps on the road we always went around them, I was in charge and I felt like a sitting duck waiting on them. We were I always felt taken advantage of with the Specialist E-5 rank. Perhaps if they took better care of me I would have done what they wanted and stayed in the military longer.
I would like to see the daily log books for the 108th. to see what had happened. Also I have been going to the PTSD clinic at the Oklahoma City VA Hosp. and I will be persuing a pension for this,also my hearing disability from the artillary and I want to be checked for agent orange. I was told that there wasn't a test for agent orange just a checkup. I feel I need to substanuate these claims in case they decide to cut funding in the future. I was subjected to these chemicals many times.
I was also stationed at a Nike Hercules Missle base in Maryland in 1967 & 1968. I was subjected to radiation several times. It's a wonder I don't glow in the dark.

Hello and thank you for your assistance and the great work you are doing to assist all of us.

I served with D Company 3/8th 4th Infantry from October 1968-October 1969 and anything you could find out would be great.

I retired after 20 years from the USAR so have had a couple agent orange screens but one never knows. Would love to have some documents to go to the local VA with at Ft. Hamilton. I just received a PTSD rating of 10% and Tinnitus at 10% for 1 ear whch I understand is going to be changed to both ears shortly by the VA.

By the way I also just e-mailed you with this same request. BUT IT CAME BACK COULD NOT LOCATE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS

hi this is michael benoit wentto your web sight and cannot get on it shows that page can't be found i was with the hhc 2/501 inf 101st airborne camp hochmuth phu-bai in june71 until i was evaced out in aug i drove 2/1/2 ton trucks while i was there that was my job after i was evaced out i went to guam then sent back in to nam i was assigned to the 34th gen sup. grp 110th transport depot on tan son nhut air base from sept 71till march 72 i did the same thing i was still driving i am trying to get info on my units to help me with my claim for ptst but i cannot get anything about were i was or any unit rosters if you respond to my mail and you need any info on me let me know i will give you any thing you need my e-mail is [e-mail] mike

hi my name is michael benoit i was with the hhc 2/501st inf 101st airborne at camp hochmuth 1971 in phu-bai i drove 2/1/2 ton trucks while i was there i saw when they sprayed agent orange i drove highway one every day i've been to hue cite and other surrounding areas picking up supplies and troops but where i live the va here tells me that they did not sprayed any thing at all and i was not in a area when they did sprayed but i know that it is not true me e-mail is [e-mail]
