Special Warplane Sent to Vietnam
The United States is rushing a specially modified plane to Vietnam to bolster the defenses around Khe Sanh.
The heavily armed craft can fly over enemy lines for hours and is equipped with sensing devices to locate the enemy despite darkness, fog, heavy clouds or jungle cover.
The plane, the AC-130, is a modified version of a four engine military cargo craft. Eight automatic weapons, when fired simultaneously from their mountings on one side of the plane, can turn out 48,000 rounds a minute. In the expected battle at Khe Sanh, in which American strategists are counting on superior firepower to defeat massed enemy manpower, the addition of even a single new item such as the AC-130 is a potent new to support the beleaguered outpost at Khe Sanh.
