LONG BINH, (lst LOG) –A 1st Logistical Command soldier has been awarded the Silver Star Medal for heroism in Vietnam.
Sergeant Micllael W. Lathcoe received the nation's third highest award for his actions on June 19, 1967 while a member of Co. A, 4th Bn., 47th Inf., 9th. Infantry Division. At the same ceremony he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for heroism for actions that took place a month earlier.
. The sergeant, then a Specialist 4, earned the Silver Star when his unit came under an intense volume of automatic and semiautomatic weapons fire by a numerically superior enemy force.
Immediately sensing the grave situation his squad was in, he started maneuvering toward the enemy with his rifle blazing, inspiring his men to follow.
Although wounded in the charge, he continued to bring a deadly rain of fire on the enemy, resulting in the destruction of one gun emplacement and the capture of three enemy soldiers.
