Co A, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division
Awarded: Bronze Star with "V" Device (Posthumously)
Date Action: 19 July 1966
Theater: Republic of Vietnam
Reason: For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Platoon Sergeant Green distinguished himself by heroic actions on 19 July 1966, in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of the above date, the 1st platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry was engaged in a search and destroy operation in the vicinity of Ho Bo Woods, Republic of Vietnam. While moving to its objective, the platoon became engaged with a numerically superior enemy force. The platoon received a heavy volume of automatic weapons, mortar, and rifle grenade fire from the enemy. Realizing the platoon was in a desperate situation , Sergeant Green constantly exposed himself to a deadly sleet of enemy bullets while he maneuvered his men into position to defend his beleaguered right flank. As he moved among his men, he directed fire and offered encouragement. In doing so , he had to move into an exposed position to engage the enemy. Without hesitation and complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Green charged across the exposed area. The high level of courage with which he displayed forced the enemy to fall back. His unhesitating sacrifice enabled the platoon to hold off the enemy that greatly outnumbered them. Sergeant Green's outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery is in keeping with the highest standards of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
