[July 2, 1968, Hill 37, Vietnam]
Dear Mom + Dad
Well here I am on hill 37 just a little
bit southwest of hill 55. It's not much to
look at but then what is? I was glad to
get off of hill 55 because my chances of
getting hit were just as good as they are
here. Normally in battalion chances are
greater. Not so here. The day I left 55
early in the morning about 0230 or so we
were hit by rockets, mortars, and sniper fire.
As usual I was safe and sound inside my
bunker but I had a couple of good friends
on post at the time. They were on finger 3
which is on the east side of 55 and faces
Dodge City (a good name for it). As I said they
were out there in bunkers, that wouldn't stop
a spit ball never mind a rocket. One of them
recieved a direct hit in the head with a B40
rocket (he had only 26 days left over here).
The other was still living and was med-
evaced but died later. Later that day the CO
said that finger 3 wouldn't be manned untill
it was rebuilt and fortified (a lot of good it
did them).
Anyway so much for our great leadership.
It's real nice here compared to 55. I no
sooner arrived than I was promised corporal
in the next promotions. Of course with a
promotion that means a pay raise not to
mention the other raise of July 1 and my going
over 2. The money should be rolling in before
long. I have my own FAC team in TACP and
I'm number 2 in seniority. As I said, it's pretty
good here.
Your son,
Clyde
