Dear Mom + Dad,
I would have written sooner but
I have been out in the bush
lately. Being out there you
see many different things. Just
the other day I was with a
patrol snooping through the
bush for charlie and we came
upon a small hamlet. The
people there were growing rice
and tobacco. Just watching them
I coul dsee at least one hundred
ways to improve their farming.
All it takes is a little common
sense to not only improve
their crops but anything else.
Another time we were on a
road sweep looking for mines
and booby traps and the
people we met always waved
and said "Hello G.I." Then we
would go through a hamlet
and as always the same
three houses would be deserted.
You realize then that one or
more of those people you saw
were V.C. and there is nothing
you can do about it.
Anyway I haven't been
transfered because all of
the 5th MAR. DIV. is comming to
Nam including my old outfit,
the 28th Marines. I guess I'll
be here for the rest of my tour.
Now! You wanted a lot of
questions answered. The soap
is for grandma. I'm going to
check up on record and
record player and let you know.
All of my civilian shirts were
either worn out or to small
so I threw them away or
gave them to somebody. As
for how the Detroit Free Press
got into that box. "You've got
me haning." Yes I do have
13 months to do. No you didn't
see me in "Operation Entertainment
because I wasn't anywhere near
there at the time. I just got
back from El Toro in time
to see the end of the show.
Those pictures were taken by
a friend of mine. I recieved
the fruit cake the other day.
When I ate it I could almost
imagine I was home again.
When I was reading both
of your letters the other day
Mom said that it wasn't spring
yet and Dad said it was. You
probably don't know it but we
get weather reports about the
states on the radio here. It
seems that you are partly
right and partly wrong. I heard
about the nice weather and
the snow. Actually that's
nothing because over here
the temperature has been
between 95 and 100. Lately
we have been pushing 105.
Believe me your weather is
nothing compared to it over here.
I'm trying to find something
to buy for Marty for his
Confirmation. There's so much
here that I'm confused but
don't worry I'll find something.
I guess that's about it except
I wish Dad would quit putting
that ending of "don't trust
anyone" on the end of his
letters. I'll admitt that I used
to be soft hearted until I saw
some of my friends get zapped.
If it was up to me I would
shoot all of them.
Your son,
Clyde
