[March 2, 1968, Da Nang, Vietnam]
Dear Mom + Dad
I recieved the letters last
night, thanks for the instant
tea. Things like that come in
handy once in a while. Actually
I don't need too much because
I can get "Kool-Aid" from the
mess hall supply house. You
should see our hut. When 3/5
moved out they left a broken
down refrigerator laying around.
We turned it on its back and
put a block of ice in it.
We keep it stocked with beer,
soda and canned peaches and
pears.
Anyway things here are pretty
quiet for now. They haven't shot
at me yet so I think I'll keep
it that way. Since 3/5 left we
have been expecting to get hit
but we haven't. 3/5 moved up
north to a possible tragic fate.
What I mean is that Jeanne
Dixson (the one who predicted
President Kennedy's death) said
that the war would end this
spring. She also said that the
worst fighting would take place
and that 3/5 would be wiped
out. She may be right but we
all hope she is wrong. Anyway
I have a nice job. Whenever the
Lt. Col. goes into Da Nang I
go with him riding shotgun
in a jeep behind his. It's nice
because I get to see the people
and the country. You should see
all the people working in the
rice paddies and walking along
the road. I've seen some old
women carrying huge loads on
their shoulders that I wouldn't
like to carry.
I don't see how they can
work like they do with a
war going on here. Also how
they can work in this heat.
It's only March but is it getting
hot. If this is any indication
of this summer then I think
I'll jump into our cooler. Well
that's about all except that I
want dad to check on .45
cal. pistols. Especially the Colt
Commander or anything else
he might think I need. I'm
going to check on it here and
let you know.
Yours truly,
Clyde
P. S. send those pills because
I can't see what would happen
to them. Also it's 2/27 1st Mar. Div
