Assigned to the Headquarters & Service Battery Survey Section, Pfc Hegener was conducting a crater analysis of impacted rounds when a fire broke in the base ammunition storage area. Unhesitatingly, he rushed to the fire in an attempt to extinguish the flames though the ammunition began to explode from the intensive heat. Disregarding the threat of personal danger, Pfc Hegener remained at his post until driven off by the now uncontrollable flames. PFC SYDNEY E. HEGENER HQ & SVC Bty, 6th Bn, 29th Field Artillery (RVN) Awarded the Army Commendation Medal w/"V" November 15, 1967 members.tripod.com/~msg_fisher/cite-9.html
