MARCH 11, 1967 SAND CEMENT IS ANSWER CAM RANH BAY The 1st Construction Platoon of Company B, 864th Engineer Battalion, has solved the depot drainage problem here at last. The answer to the problem was sand cement. The original idea of putting ditches in the sand gave way to using sandbags and peneprime. Then a small area was lined with a sand cement called gunite. The rains came, the waters rose, and the only section that held was the gunite one. With a crew of 10 men, the platoon sergeant found that an average of 30 cubic yards of sand cement per day could be placed. This amount covered 80 feet of ditch with a hard surface immune to foot traffic which had destroyed the original peneprime ditches. Plans for the future include all ditches in the depot to be treated with the sand cement mixture prior to the next monsoon season
