all the things that happened to me in Nam I can remember that some times Charlie was'nt the worst enemy. We were mechanized and at times we would break bush and get rained on by red ants.It did'nt matter who or what was around, all we could do was jump off the tracks and strip to beat the ants off. Those ants tried to eat us alive. Some times the littlest things can be huge monsters.

Red ants ah yes they were a joy to behold while in the bush. They could be anywhere and could attack from below or from above they were even capable of anphibious landings. The trick was to be alert for the red glint they would give off in the sunlight. One operation we were on was about four days and it was hot as hell. Water was gone and we were all about to call in a chopper when my platoon stumbled upon a small orchard or tangerine trees. Well we were all very thirsty and the tangerines were very ripe however several of the trees were covered with red ants. I quess they wanted the fruit also. Every other time I (we) avoided these ants but not this time. Those ants did not have a chance for those tangerines. I must have eaten 30 of those delicious fruit. I guess it was one of those little pieces of luck that happen time to time. WE all managed to get back to the extraction point with a few left over fruit. I still have no idea how those trees were located where they were there were no villages nearby but they were there just the same.
