It is said that truth is stranger than fiction. This story really is.
Two of my friends and I joined the Army out of Abilene, Texas on 29 Jul 69. We went to Ft. Bliss for basic training. We completed training, one, Ricky Sutton, went to arty training at Ft. Sill. The second went to water purification school, I think this was at Ft. Leonard Wood. I went to Little Creek, Va. until March of 70. I transferred to Ft. Polk in the middle of March.
Next stop, you guessed it , Viet Nam.
I flew from An Khe to an LZ, who knows where. I was just barely 19 and scared of everything.
I jumped out of the helicopter with all the equipment. (Iwas pouring down buckets of rain)
A voice came out of a culvert and said " are you lost boy>' I looked into the culvert and theree was Ricky. My friend from Sweetwater, Texas, population 11,000. I spent the night with him in the culvert. I didn't know outgoing from incoming.
This was one of the stangist, and certainly the most surprising thing that ever happened to me in my short life/
