To the dirt-eating grunt, Vietnam was an endless succession of bummers. Besides the never-ending fear of death, we had to endure a host of miseries: merciless humps through a sun-scorched landscape packing eighty pregnant pounds, brain-boiling heat, hot house humidity, dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunburn, red dust, torrential rains, boot-sucking mud, blood-sucking leeches, steaming jungles, malaria, dysentery, razorsharp elephant grass, bush sores, jungle rot, moaning and groaning, meals in green cans, armies of insects, fire ants, poisonous centipedes, mosquitoes, flies, bush snakes, vipers, scorpions, rats, bordedom, incoming fire, body bags, and a thousand more discomforts. Dispite all this the grunt did his job well.

before I went to Nam & was an educated Grunt, 106 recoiless rifle mounted on a mule & used to laugh at the Grunts humping the fence line at Gitmo, but when I got to Nam & someone said "Charlie Company" I said hold on, I'm 106's. The reply was," not in Nam you're not." Wouldn't change it for anything. Nothin' like gruntin'.

I have never been able to explain it to anyone. Only another grunt knows. The time goes by until the past your kidhood is gone . There is no tomorrow, no yesterday only the now. There is only the bush , the heat , the hunt , the reaction to danger . I have no idea how we did it . I am proud that I was a grunt .

It was being dirty, wet, with long night that you just hope to see tommorw. Then you hump all day.It was being afraid and watching after each other. Wondering who would get it today.
