Burn-Barrel Latrine. The burn-barrel (burn out) latrine was used extensively in Vietnam. An enclosed building was constructed of tarps, tin, plywood, and suitable framing lumber. The structure usually contained 2 to 4 toilet seats built over 55 gallon drums that were cut in half. A burn barrel was placed under each seat. All barrels were "primed" with 3 inches of diesel fuel prior to placing them into service. This allowed the fecal matter to become oil soaked enhancing complete thermal destruction of fecal matter during the daily (or more often if needed) burn out process. The oil also serves as an insect repellent and obnoxious odor deterrent. (Caution!! "NO SMOKING" inside and outside of the structure)When the barrels were 1/2 to 2/3 full they were removed from the structure and burned out. Everyone was encourage to use urine soakage pits (P--- Tubes) of burn barrel latrines since additional fuel will be required to promote complete burning. To burn, mix 4 parts diesel fuel to one part gasoline (mogas) until the contents of the barrel was sufficiently covered. Ignite the barrel with a long stick or pole used to stir the mixture. Sticks or poles that were less than 4 feet in length must not be used. Burning was continued until the contents of the barrels were reduced to a fine ash, which took more than one attempt. Burial of ashes to a depth of 12 inches is acceptable. Scattering the ashes over ground surfaces was not appreciated.
